It is hard to over emphasize the importance of crate training your deaf dog. While a quality crate is a must, an important additional tool for training, everyday use, and injury recovery is the exercise pen.
For our dogs, we daily use both enclosed crates and exercise pens. What a pen allows you to do is provide a larger area and to reach over and interact more with your pup. This is a great way to train, you can ask for sit, down, turn-around, shake, all the fun basic commands and easily provide treats.
And, should an injury occur, an x-pen is exactly what you need to restrict the movement of your pup. You can set it up anywhere and give the dog a small but adjustable amount of space for movement as they recover. If you’ve incorporated the x-pen in to play and everyday life, then your dog will be used to it should they have to be confined for recovery.
We recommend steel x-pens for their durability and thinness, and the line by MidWest has been our go to for years.
