Meet 11 month old deaf Border Collie Suki who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish her, make daily positive reinforcement training/socialization/enrichment a priority and always keep her safe.

From her caregiver: Suki is a sweet and lovable deaf border collie. We got her as a puppy and didn’t realize she was deaf at first. Once we found out she was deaf we fully invested ourselves in learning how to work with and train a deaf dog. Suki is extremely smart and LOVES food so training has been a breeze with her. We got her as a companion for our other dog who is an Aussie/Heeler mix. However, things have heated up between them and our other dog has gone for Suki multiple times where Suki ended up with puncture wounds. We now have to keep them separate and realized adding a second dog to our family has created a lot of stress on our first dog which has now in turn started to affect Suki.

As the tension between the dogs has grown we noticed Suki starting to display some OCD/stress habits. She has started licking the walls and snapping at the air when she gets stressed. She also will randomly have some light chasing now especially at night with lights from outside or form the TV. She didn’t do this originally and we have found that thankfully she is easily redirected if someone plays with her or we give her something to chew or work on like a Kong with treats inside. This makes us feel it is more related to pent up energy/stress. We love Suki and we have tried working it out so the two dogs can live together but we have found that it has just become stressful on both of them and is lowering the quality of life for both the dogs and us.

Suki is still a puppy and we want to her to live a long and happy life in a home where she doesn’t have to be stressed and worried about getting in fights. Suki is very affectionate (be prepared for her to plop fully onto you once you start petting her) and she is very focused and loves to learn. She is still young and and would be a good dog for someone who wants a deaf dog without a ton of health or behavioral issues in their past. The two potential issues to be aware of is she does seem to have a strong prey drive. She has somehow caught and killed several birds. Because of this she would probably not be a good fit for someone with smaller pets or chickens. Also as I mentioned she is showing early signs of light chasing/fixation. She is not afraid of lights but seems to like chasing them/watching them specifically at night. We have worked hard to correct this and redirect her so it doesn’t become a compulsion so whoever adopts her would just need to stay vigilant in this as well, making sure she gets her energy out through playing and giving her chews and food puzzles to work on instead.

Suki loves people and I believe would do well with children we just don’t have any so I can’t say for sure. She is fully house trained and we have had no issues with accidents in the house. We crate trained her from day one and she knows the sign for “got to bed” and loves sleeping in her crate, her crate is her safe space. We would provide her crate to the person who decides to adopt her.

She is currently living with us in our home but we would love to find this sweet bean her forever home with her new family!
