Meet adoptable deaf 4.5 year old Reno who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish him, become his new best friend, take him on adventures and always keep him safe.
From his current caregiver: Reno has been our pup for over 4 years now. When my husband and I adopted him he was as only a 6 week old Blue Heeler and the white in his fur was still visible from how young he was. We took him home and instantly he made himself cozy. He was a wonderer and a great sleeper- a combination that got a little tricky when of we found out he was completely deaf! He would fall asleep under the furniture and behind doors, giving us a scare when we couldn’t find him till we did a whole sweep of the house! Many would have given him up because of his disability, but to us it made him even more special. His other senses were even more acute, and the best part- he was a calmer dog for it. When we got him trained, our trainer explained to us that his ability to focus was even greater than any dog with the ability to listen because he focused by sight, always keeping her in his line of vision. Reno’s recall ability made it an easier transfer when we moved to the city 3 years later. Moving to the city did not come without its challenges.
Reno’s breed- cattle dog- requires space to run, to get his energy out- something that became increasingly difficult as my husband’s career required him to travel, and we had a little one on the way. Our small walks together were still special and as trained, he always made me feel safe at the park. For a while after we had our daughter adjusting to parenting life took us away from Reno, but Reno’s curiosity of the baby brought him close to her. Somehow he knew to be gentle and cautious around our baby, and in so many ways like this Reno has been so special to us. With the sweet moments we shared, I also began to notice the hard parts Reno had to deal with when it came to being second to a baby. Less outside running time, less time with us, and his need to let our energy would push him to get hyperactive- digging and chewing shoes. Aside from being pushed to second, we are also in the middle of moving to a different state for work relocation. With this change in our lives, we realized Reno deserved a better home, one that could give him the attention and space a Blue heeler could thrive in. We are faced with a heartbreaking decision to re-home him, because as hard as it it to part from our first pup, he deserves a happier life than the one he has now. Our greatest fear is that if we can not find an owner, he would be placed in a shelter that would deem him “unadoptable” because of his disability and would not be given the fair chance of a forever home. He is a gifted dog, very loyal, and a great companion. We have found a no-kill shelter that is willing to take him, but we are looking to family friends, Facebook posts, and anyone who would be willing to take Reno before a dog shelter takes him. Please if anyone is interested or if you could simply share this post- we would be eternally grateful!
