Meet adoptable deaf Great Dane Odin who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish him and keep him safe.

From his rescue advocate:

Name: Odin
Gender: Male
Age: 4 years
Breed: Great Dane
Weight: ~100lbs
Disability: deaf
Dogs: yes
Cats: yes
Kids: older children
Location: Mooresville, IN

Socialization/training: Odin was originally seen being given away on Hoobly and we reached out to see if we could assist by taking him in to properly screen new homes. We believe finances likely played a role in the owners’ need to rehome. Odin arrived to us with a severe bladder infection, pretty bad flea allergy dermatitis, and an uncomfortable looking gait. Odin has spent his time in his foster home with up to 13 other dogs at a time and has done great with all of them. He has been around a baby and been very sweet to her although small children he could easily knock down accidentally so older children are preferred for him. He hasn’t had much training yet but he has learned to not jump, has been crate trained, and is a very smart boy and will pick up on additional training fast.

Crate trained: Odin is crate trained. When he first came to us he cried constantly in his crate. With positive associations and conditioning to the crate Odin now happily stays in his crate for up to 8 hours at a time and overnight. The only exception is if he can see you then he will demand to be let out by barking which we are still working on so we would recommend crating him in a low traffic area of the house such as a guest room or basement. We also always expect a little regression with crate training when moving to a new home, consistency will be key in keeping what he learned at his foster home.

Leash trained: Odin does okay on a leash he can pull and get excited if he sees something stimulating but he is not terrible.

Activity Level: He is a typical young Dane. He gets bursts of energy and then is good to sleep for hours. He would be a great couch ornament if he had a short walk each day or a yard to romp around in.

Fence: A fence is not required for Odin, however with him being deaf he would need to either be inside a fence or on a leash at all times for safety.

Behavior: Odin’s only “bad behavior” is that he tends to bark to get what he wants. He barks to get out of his crate, barks for his food, barks for attention, ect. Once he gets what he wants he’s pretty quiet but when he wants something he will let you know. Beyond that Odin is a sweet boy who loves everyone and really just wants to be near his people. He is the definition of a shadow dog.

Health: Odin was diagnosed with early arthritis in one hip and mild hip dysplasia in the other hip which was causing him to drag his toes a bit when he walked. He will need to be on joint supplements for life. These aren’t terribly expensive but are an additional and necessary cost you will NEED to be committed to purchasing for him if you want to adopt Odin. Since getting these supplements it’s been a night and day difference in his walking.

Adoption fee: $250
