Murphy’s Happy Tail was submitted by Courtney Georg. Murphy sure is adorable! Thanks for sending in Murphy’s Happy Tail Courtney. According to my deaf dogs Nitro, Bud and myself, you and Murphy totally ROCK! ~ Christina, Nitro and Bud Lee – Deaf Dogs Rock
Two years ago we bought a Boston Terrier puppy from a local pet store. I was so excited, I had only been begging my boyfriend for 2 years! We named him Murphy and he is my everything!
We started realizing he was being very stubborn, never coming when we called him and he also never heard us come home. I would have to touch him to wake him up. So we started thinking maybe he was deaf, we started shaking coins when he was sleeping to see if he heard them, but he never did. We also tried dog whistles and nothing. So this is already about 6 months in or more by the time we actually thought he was deaf. Our friends got us a book for Christmas called “Living with a deaf dog.” Once we read that we knew for sure he was deaf! I was heartbroken but loved him even more!
I started doing sign language with him and he knows about 10 signs! After awhile we wondered if another dog would help. We started looking to adopt another Boston to be Murphy’s hearing companion. It was a long search and a lot of getting turned down, because I didn’t work from home. I was getting so upset, how could they not send a dog to a good home??
Finally in March we saw Bozz on petfinder. He was very handsome. So we contacted the shelter and they said a lot of people were interested so we needed to get there ASAP! We lived 2 hours away, so we only could go Saturday, the lady said she’d call me Friday and let me know if he was still available. Luckily she called and we woke up early to be there when they opened.
We took Murphy to make sure they would get along. Murphy was timid at first and Bozz was more interested in us. But after awhile they were ripping and tearing around. Murphy loves other dogs so we knew he would love Bozz.
So we left with Bozz! Bozz is 5 and a Boston as well. We had a few bumps with Bozz but nothing major. Murphy loves him, he irritates him constantly with always wanting to play. It feels great knowing we saved a dog and that Murphy will never be alone.
We do sign language with both dogs. It’s already great that when I whistle for Bozz, Murphy comes running too. Our main goal is that if they ever got loose they’d stay together and us calling Bozz would make Murphy come too.
They are the 2 best Boston’s I could of ever asked for! I’m so happy we found Murphy a hearing companion!
