Meet adoptable deaf/vision impaired, one year old, border collie Jack Frost who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish him, teach him new touch cues and always keep him safe. Jack Frost is looking for a home with Adults only.

From his rescue advocate:

Jack Frost is an approximately year old Border Collie, who has some birth defects. Don’t tell Jack that though, he has no idea that he is not perfectly normal! Jack is really an amazing young dog. despite his disabilities, he is athletic and happy and active and fun.

Jack is the product of irresponsible breeding when an unethical person chooses to breed two merle colored dogs to each other which can produce a higher incidence of birth defects.

Jack is completely deaf. He also has a condition called starfish pupil, common in double merle breedings. The formation of the pupil does not allow it to properly contract, which does not allow the eye to react properly to light. Jack can see, but not normally, and we are not quite sure how much his vision is affected.

Despite all of these things, Jack is a confident, happy, active and responsive young boy. He has a wonderful, quirky, goofy, entertaining personality. He loves to learn and is responsive to learning. He is quite smart and learns quickly. Jack is high energy and loves to play. He does exceptionally well getting around. He loves to go on walks where he can use his nose and explore. Jack navigates very well, however, he cannot see things like steep drops or grates on the ground, so needs to be kept safe from certain things while walking.

Jack loves to zoom around the yard at top speed, and he can navigate perfectly doing so. He has learned to play with the other young dogs in his foster home and loves to play. He cannot hear or see normal dog to dog signals, so he will not be a good fit for every dog. A dog meet and greet will be required.

Jack adores toys and will bounce them around and squeak them and play with them on his own. He loves to gnaw on a bone and will happily lie down and entertain himself with one. He can even play a little bit of fetch, if the toy is thrown reasonably close to him and he sees the motion. He’s not very good at bringing the toy back yet!

Jack came into the shelter, very thin and covered in fleas. He does have food reactivity with other dogs. He is also very stressed and nervous about anyone approaching his food while eating. He is currently fed only in his crate and we strongly recommend that this process is continued in his permanent home.

While he does okay around the other dogs and people with bones and toys, high value treats and food cannot be given to him in the presence of other dogs. Most likely he had to fight for his food as a puppy. Because he was disabled, getting that food was probably difficult for him. While we are working on this issue in his foster home, because of his lack of hearing and abnormal sight, this may always be part of his personality. For this reason, a home with children will not be considered for Jack.

Jack is learning some touch commands in his foster home. We are experimenting with ways to recall him from the yard. He learns quickly.

We will absolutely require a hard, secure fence for any home that we consider for Jack. He can never be loose in an unsecured area. Jack cannot hear and cannot see properly and would it be at huge risk of getting lost or injured if he was ever to be loose. Jack needs to be walked in a Martingale style collar. A regular collar or a harness risks him getting out and getting loose. These are things that will be seriously considered for any potential adopter.

Jack requires daily exercise and time with his people. He will not do well in a home where people are gone long hours of the day. He would benefit from some specialized training and could potentially do well in activities such as scent work or obedience with hand signals. The future is bright for Jack, despite his disabilities and he is going to make someone a wonderful companion.

Jack is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, crate trained, housebroken, and walks well on a leash.

Jack’s adoption fee is $400. Please email bimmersbcr@yahoo.com for an adoption application.
