Fiona is a 3-year old spayed mixed breed who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish her, become her new best friend and always keep her safe.
From her foster mom: Fiona initially came to Sunny Pits rescue with a litter of puppies and was adopted by her foster family. After a little over 2 years, her family made the hard decision to rehome her.
Fiona is a sweet goofball with medium energy, and LOVES her toys, balls, bones, and paper towel rolls! She tosses them around and will spend lots of time gnawing on bones and Kongs. This leggy, bouncy girl can clear a 4-foot gate (or fence) without even touching it! She likes to sit with her humans on the couch and loves a good neck scratch.
As with any dog, Fiona needs regular exercise, especially walks. She gets a little overwhelmed by all the sights and smells, but does well on a leash with proper guidance. She loves to play ball and swim.
Though crate-trained, Fiona has had a hard time being left alone in her crate when she can’t see her humans. She much prefers to sleep on a fluffy blanket and pillows next to her foster sister’s bed. We’re working on it. :)
Fiona, like many deafies, is a little clingy. A consistent, structured routine and boundaries are a must to help her understand what’s expected of her. She knows a few hand signals, but you don’t have to know ASL to communicate – deafies are almost always watching you so some basic commands are all you need (come, sit, wait, good/yes, crate, no, outside, eat, and down are about it!)
Fiona is a little insecure right now. She growls when other animals come near here when she has toys, food, and when she is in her crate or on the couch. She has not acted on her opinions, and can be quickly corrected with just a touch. To be safe she is fed in her crate and monitored she has anything she thinks someone else might want. She lives with another female dog about her size, and a few kitties. Unfortunately, she and her foster sister haven’t been very trusting of each other. She is curious about what the kitties are doing but that’s about it. Fiona is playful, but is easily overwhelmed/overstimulated if her playmate is pushy or overly assertive.
Here’s some ideas for what might make the best home for Fiona:
-Consistent boundaries and clear behavior expectations. This is really important, as she can get anxious when left to her own devices and allowed to be clingy.
-Can be left alone outside of her crate, but she hasn’t been alone for more than a few hours in her foster home.
-A good supply of rubber toys, Nylabones, balls, and paper towel rolls!
-If there is already a canine companion in the home, he/she would be best as low-to-medium energy, patient with her nosiness. Fiona will initiate play but then gets overstimulated and nervous when her foster sister joins in.
-Consistent exercise, especially walks
-If you have a yard, you’ll need fence higher than 4 feet and supervision. Extra bonus if you have a place for her to play in the water.
-Slow introductions to new people and dogs (as with any dog)
