Thanks to our amazing Deaf Dogs Rock community of supporters, Deaf Dosg Rock was able to offer a full sponsorship to deaf dogs Bucky and Chopper at their 11th hour at the shelter! They were sittign in the Franklin County Animal Control in Columbus, Ohio. When I noticed on one of the deaf dog’s Facebook threads there was a rescue in Ohio thinking about rescuing them if they could get a sponsor and a foster lined up, I reached out to them and offered both deaf dogs a DDR sponsorship and they graciously excepted our offer (thank goodness).
New Beginnings K-9 Rescue in Loudonville, OH literally “came to the rescue” of these two deafies. You will see pictured below their shelter photos from copitsavers who networked them followed by each dog’s freedom ride! Don’t you just love “freedom ride” photos? Thanks to copitsavers for networking both dogs for weeks and for New Beginnings K-9 Rescue for stepping up. Chopper is going to need some expensive
Chopper was taken to the Vet and here is an update on his condition from New Beginnings K9 Rescue:
Chopper update….
We’re just leaving MedVet and Chopper hasn’t been diagnosed with a trachea collapse YET. The doctor who saw him today said a tracheal collapse is possible, but he wanted to try a few things first before surgery.
1. Chopper needs a special harness that will not add pressure to his trachea or his throat/upper chest area. We are currently searching for one.
2. Surgery in a larger dog like Chopper would likely cause more irritation and discomfort than what he’s dealing with now. The vet recommend to try 2 weeks of special care before contacting them for a re-evaluation.
3. Chopper needs a very calm, quiet, relaxed foster home with a fenced yard (leashing him is to be avoided if possible).
4. Chopper will be taking Trazodone pills every 8 hours for 2 weeks. These are pills for anxiety to help keep him calm and relaxed.
5. Metronidazole will be given also for 3 days to help with diarrhea and tracheal inflammation.
Choppers doctor is not ruling out surgery, but he wants to avoid it if at all possible. We will be following his guidelines and contacting them again in two weeks.
While we were at the vet today, Chopper turned blue and gave us all a pretty hefty scare. He was rushed to the back where he was sedated and evaluated.
We have a foster lined up for Chopper, but due to not having a fenced yard and another dog, he is looking for a foster home again. Must be willing to allow crate time for rest and able to drive to Fredericktown vet or MedVet in case of an emergency.
The rescue took Chopper to the pet store to buy a new harness for him since he can’t wear a collar. Thanks again to New Beginnings K-9 Rescue for pulling these two deafies! According to my deaf dogs Nitro, Bud and Bowie (and myself), you all totally ROCK!
