Gift Idea # 2 – Group III – Educational Training Information by Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D.
These are great training tools and books by Patricia McConnell, PhD. Many of our deaf dog owners have experienced their dogs having mild to severe separation anxiety (SA) to some level. Also sometimes we can feel outnumbered by our dogs so I truly think you will all enjoy what Patricia McConnell has to offer us with her wealth of information. She provides the necessary tools and information to get us through some of our most challenging K-9 training issues.
The first of Patricia’s easy to read booklet’s I recommend is I’ll Be Home Soon on how to deal with your deaf dogs Separation Anxiety.
Separation Anxiety (SA) is a serious problem in which your dog panics at your departure and stays panicked until you return. Clear and concise, this easy-to-read booklet is written for anyone who wants to leave the house knowing that their dog is happy and their house is safe. Price: $ 7.95. Click here to order “I’ll Be Home Soon”.
The second of Patricia McConnell’s gifts I recommend is the DVD Feeling Outnumbered? DVD.
Full of clear demonstrations and practical ideas for keeping life fun in houses with two or more dogs, this DVD is a great resource for all multiple dog owners, whatever their level of training experience. After watching Feeling Outnumbered?, you’ll have:
A canine pack that is patient and polite instead of demanding and pushy
A variety of tools to create calm out of chaos
Peaceful mealtimes, with each dog waiting his or her turn
Management skills to stop trouble before it starts
The ability to read the early warnings signs that suggest trouble might be brewing
Price: $ 29.95. Click here to order Feeling Outnumbered? DVD from patriciamcconnell.com
Since I am the leader of my pack here at Deaf Dogs Rock, and this is what I preach, I highly recommend Patricia’s pamphlet titled Leader of The Pack as a third option to purchase for a gift. All three of these items would make great gifts for friends and family who have deaf and hearing dogs.
It’s NOT about “dominance!” Learn how to love your dogs without spoiling them and provide boundaries without intimidation. This concise and affordable pamphlet clarifies how to be a benevolent leader and help your dog learn to be a calm and confident member of the family. Leader of the Pack introduces important subjects like…
Integrating structure throughout the day for a more well-behaved household
Establishing boundaries to create a patient & polite dog
Why the “Alpha Rollover” is dangerous to both you and your dog Price: $ 3.95. Click here to order this pamphlet from patriciamcconnell.com

Gift Idea # 3 – Group III – Empire Dog Crate Heavy Duty Dog Cage from dogsupplies.com
Since Chris and I have adopted Bud, we noticed he does have separation anxiety when he is in his crate and we are gone. Not at all when we are sleeping next to him at night only if we leave the house. With that being said, we will soon be ordering the Empire Dog Crate to keep Bud safe in case an emergency where we would need to crate him inside. This way we don’t have to worry about him getting hurt by the flimsy crates we have him in at night when we are sleeping.
Product Description: Empire Cages are the world’s strongest cages. These steel cages include a floor grate, steel tray, and locking casters. Constructed to be the Alcatraz of pet cages, the 3/4″ frame is forged from 20-guage steel and reinforced by 1/2″ diameter steel tubes for the strongest, sturdiest, most durable cage on the market.
Designed specifically for powerful dogs that are able to claw or chew their way out of other cages and crates.
Heavy-duty welds and stout dual door latches make these cages virtually indestructible.
Finished in a long-lasting, high-grade hammertone for rust-resistance and durability.
The cage includes a floor grate, steel tray, and four removable locking casters for added mobility.
Price: $ 269.99. Click here to order the Empire Dog Crate at dogsupplies.com
Gift Idea # 4 – Group III – The Kong Control Grip Plus Leash
We own four of these wonderful Kong Control Grip Leashes. They are AWESOME! I call this leash paired with the Puppia Soft Harness our Deaf Dogs Rock Double Fail System. The leash clips to the dog’s collar and the other end of the leash clips to the Puppia Soft Harness so it would have to fail twice before the dog could escape from it’s handler. Once you have a Double Fail Safety system in place, you will be hooked for life! When I am walking both of my deaf dogs Nitro and Bud, this system allows me to clip the leash handles of both dogs to my diagonal shoulder strap. By doing it this way, my hands are free and then I can handle my camera to take close up shots of my deaf dogs. The Kong Control Grip Plus Leash also has an adjustable rubber grip so when one of my dogs decides to pull, I can just adjust the grip which allows me to keep my dogs close to my body and in control.
They are a little more pricey then normal leashes but I promise you will not be disappointed. Petsmart’s price: $ 24.99. Click here to order the Kong Control Grip Leash from Petsmart.com
Gift Idea # 5 – Group III – The Puppia Soft Harness
Nitro, Bud and I literally have a Puppia Soft Dog Harness in at least 6 different colors because they are wonderful! The dogs love the harness because it is a soft harness and it is comfortable. I love it because I can hook one end of the Kong Control Grip leash to my dog’s collar and the other end to the D-ring on the Puppia soft harness. I also tie a loop in the middle of the leash so I have a loop to hang onto. By using the Deaf Dogs Rock Double Fail system this system would have to fail twice before the dog could get away which is very important when you are training or walking a deaf or hearing dog.
Nitro relaxing with his Puppia Soft Harness and his Kong collar and Kong Control Grip Plus leash attached to both ends.
You can order the Puppia Soft Harness from Baxter Boo and they run between $ 24.00 and $ 32.00 depending on the size you order for your dog. Click here to go to Baxterboo.com and order a Puppia Soft Dog Harness.
Gift Idea # 6 – Group III – Dog Photo Book from Walmart.com
I have about four of the Walmart Photo books (one for each dog). They run from $ 19.96 up to $ 28.00. They are easy to make and have a variety of beautiful designs to choose from. I just go to the Walmart.com photo section, click on photo gifts and choose which photo book to upload my photos so I can make a beautiful and thoughtful gifts for friends and family. Here is a photo of my deaf dog Nitro’s book:
You have many choices to choose from for the outside front cover of the book. I went to a dark blue on Nitro’s photo book.
Not only is if fun to make this book but the quality is amazing when you consider it is a hard bound full color book for under $ 30.00.
