This week I received two emails for dogs in need of our help. One was from a nice lady named Sherri wanting me to list her little deaf dog on our website because she could not afford the medical care for her dog. She loves her dog more then anything in the world and she just wanted her dog to go to a good home with someone who could get her dog the allergy shots the dog needs. Her dog was miserable itching his skin raw! Instead of listing the dog, I reached out to the owner and told her Deaf Dogs Rock would try to help with medical costs. Her Vet had said any treatment would run $275 so I asked her to shop around to a Vet Clinic in her area that services lower income households and she did. What she came up with was a full treatment for $80 and she has an appointment for her sweet little dog this week. Deaf Dogs Rock called the Vet Clinic directly and explained the situation and put a $100 credit on her new account so she can also afford additional shots in the future at a “recheck” appointment if she needs one. I also suggested that she go buy a small bag of Blue Buffalo Small Breed Dog Food in case her dog is allergic to grain in the dog’s food.
Here are a couple of photos Sherri sent me of her itchy little deaf dog.
The next email I received was from a pound in Ohio that we have worked with in the past, Andrea their contact person wanted me to list a 3 year old deaf female they have in their shelter/pound. At this particular shelter they usually don’t spay/neuter the dogs until AFTER they have been adopted. What I worry about when a shelter does this is what happens when a family takes a unspayed dog home. Many times there will be major issues with an un-spayed female going into a new home with other dogs present so it is best to have it already done.
Also I personally think with a financial commitment from Deaf Dogs Rock (paying for a spay-neuter surgery) the shelter staff at the pound will give the dog a lot more time to be adopted. I got another message today from my contact at the shelter and she told me already there is a family coming often training Sugar with sign commands and she is learning very fast.
Just few months back we sponsored another deaf dog at the same shelter named Chowder. By sponsoring Chowder he was neutered right away and got adopted with in two weeks of his neuter surgery. He went to a great home so we know sponsorship works when we work together as a team with shelters and pounds. Sugar’s surgery was scheduled for today so I will be listing her in our Adoptable Deaf Dogs section today.
A big shout out to all of you for supporting Deaf Dogs Rock. Thanks also to the supporters who commit to a monthly donation on our donation page. You ALL ROCK!
