Meet adoptable deaf two year old boxer mix Chico who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish him, become his new best friend, teach him new sign cues, and always keep him safe.
From his rescue advocate: Meet Chico – a 2 yr old, Boxer / Bull Terrier mix, who weighs 68 pounds (as of 11/27/25). He was surrendered to by his previous owner who could no longer afford to properly care for him. This was an incredibly difficult decision for her because she loved this sweet boy dearly.
Chico is an incredibly sweet, affectionate, and social young dog who warms up to people right away. He absolutely loves being around people—he’ll greet you with a happy tail and a big smile every time. Chico is deaf, but you’d never know it from how well he adapts. He’s very observant and intuitive, watching closely for body language and hand gestures to pick up on what’s going on. The only thing his hearing loss really changes is that he sleeps like a log!
He’s house-trained, crate-trained, and sleeps soundly through the night. He’s got a nice balance of playful energy and quiet chill vibes. He loves walks, exploring the yard, playtime, and he’s also totally content to take a long nap! He’s eager to please and learns quickly, especially when treats or praise are involved!
Chico’s quirks:
– has the biggest stretches of all time, often accompanied by squeaky yawns
– can open latch-based gates!
– knows what a door handle is, and how to use one! Though he has yet to succeed.
– wants to give you all the kisses!
– wear’s a men’s medium T-shirt
Chico’s favorite things:
– Chico loves a good game of tug, chase, or ball!
– He is also a big cuddler and will enjoy any game as long as he gets to play it with you.
Chico knows:
– Chico has a very good sit!
– Chico knows that a double-tap on his body means “pay attention to the human!” We are transitioning for his new vibrating collar to mean “come and pay attention.”
– He has a rough understanding of what pointing means, which we’re working to enforce
– He consistently walks on a loose leash, though he still pulls a little when particularly excited
– He is crate trained and sleeps through the night!
Chico is still working on:
– Staying on the ground: He tends to jump when excited, but his threshold of excitement is going up every day!
– Counter surfing: he’s a curious boy, but he’s makin consistent progress and learning that the counter isn’t for him.
– Barking for attention: all he wants is your love! But with consistent exercise and training, Chico is learning how to ask for attention, and when its time to settle in his crate. He settles beautifully for sleep every evening.
– Chico is receiving ongoing training form his current foster, with support from Great Dog’s professional trainers
Chico would be a wonderful fit for someone who wants a loving, playful, young dog! He’d thrive in a home where he gets plenty of affection, structure, and time outdoors. Gets along well with other dogs, as long as he’s had a proper introduction.
This gorgeous boy has been posted for over 1 YEAR, let’s get him home!
