Update 3-08-2014: Charlie has been ADOPTED! A big thanks to Heather Ladd for being Charlie’s Guardian Angel and to the Preston’s for donation Charlie’s adoption fee to Deaf Dogs Rock so we can pay it forward and get another deaf pound dog neutered and ready for adoption. ~ Christina Lee – Deaf Dogs Rock
From Heather Ladd the Animal Control officer who fostered Charlie:
I have very great news!! Charlie was just adopted and is on his way to Nebraska with his new family. We had them do the adoption fee straight to your website donation page. So the donation from email: xxxxxx@gmail.com is on behalf of all you helped do in helping Charlie so that you can continue to help more and more deaf dogs everywhere. We can not say enough how thankful we are to all of your assistance!! New owners Chris and Mollie Preston from Lincoln Nebraska came with their little Boston Terrier female Joey today to pick Charlie up. They will give him a wonderful life and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. LOL I cried with happiness and sadness watching him go. We so often see so many bad things in shelter dogs that it was emotional to see such a happy ending. Thank you again for all your support, we couldn’t have done it without you!!
Heather
Just this week I received an email from an Animal Control officer near Kansas, MO and I want to share her message with all of you because this is a perfect example of how Deaf Dogs Rock can help save one deaf dog at a time with your support.
Charlie is approximately a year and a half old and is working on learning signs and is proving to be a fast learner! He is an intact male and I am working on getting that changed as soon as possible. Our shelter does not spay and neuter them before leaving but instead does a spay/neuter deposit as part of the adoption fee and they get the money back once they get it done. Having worked in the vet field I know he stands a far better chance of adoption if already neutered so I am hoping to save enough money on my own to get that done soon!
He is a super well mannered boy and gets along great with my dogs. (a Chihuahua, a hound mix, and Finn the deaf Dalmatian mix) He is curious about cats but so far my cat has not been so curious about him but Charlie knows to just stay put and not push her buttons.
Given the rough go he has had at the beginning of his life I am so amazed at how mild mannered, patient and loving he truly is. I will continue to foster him for the shelter as long as they will let me but was wondering that if possible in the near future you could add him to your deaf dogs adoptable line up?? I know that he will be hard to place locally due to his breed and deafness here in the middle of Kansas in a rather small community. The more resources available to network this boy the better!! I have attached a picture of him sitting next to my desk at work. He looks as if he is in a police interrogation and I will try to get better pictures once I get a couple of real days off to work with him at home with sunlight (flashbulbs do not do him justice) :). I will also write up a great bio for him as well.
Thank you for your time reading this and for all the hard work you all do on behalf of dogs everywhere!

Heather let who let me know she was going to foster Charlie and asked me to list Charlie on Deaf Dogs Rock under Adoptable Deaf Dogs section. The only problem I had with her request is I have a rule here at DDR and that rule is I don’t list in-tact males or un-spayed females because all deaf dogs must be fixed so they don’t make more deaf puppies.
The good news was Charlie had received shots from AC but they don’t do spay or neuter at this particular Animal Control so I could not list Charlie on our website. I told the Animal Control officer to gets some neuter quotes from her local vets to see if she could secure a reduced rate. She did a great job! When she got back to me and told me she had found a Vet Clinic in town willing to neuter Charlie for only $55 (which was half price) I was thrilled! The following morning, I called in and paid for Charlie’s neuter surgery and also told the receptionist at the Vet Clinic that Deaf Dogs Rock would also cover Charlie’s pain medications since he was a bit older and he might need them.
So Thursday February 13 poor dear Charlie will be getting his neuter surgery done. Not a very good way to bring in Valentine’s Day is it?
When an a kind Animal Control Officer falls in love with a deaf dog and reaches out to us for help, you can bet on us to step up and help if we have the money. It is because of our amazing Deaf Dogs Rock Community that we can help deaf dogs like Charlie get ready for his new home. Thanks to all of you who bless us with your generosity so we can save one deaf dog at a time. You all totally ROCK!
