Meet adoptable deaf six year old Carter who is the sweetest most loving dog looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish him, become his best friend, and always keep him safe.

From his shelter advocate: How did a sweet, loving dog like Carter find himself in a municipal animal shelter? His owner took Carter to a local veterinarian and requested he be euthanized because he couldn’t and wouldn’t care for him. Such a sad situation.
The vet contacted Oconee County Animal Control to ask that Carter be taken in as a medical care surrender rather than be put to sleep. Beginning 11/19/24, he was held at the animal hospital for health monitoring because his physical condition was poor. Carter was transferred to OCAC on 12/2/24. He immediately began to receive care and attention from OHS volunteers. Carter was able to go outside to our grassy enclosures for one on one time with a volunteer. It was heaven for him. An easy leash walker, he’s a lovely companion for a stroll or hike.
On the outside, at 75 pounds, with an all white coat, and cropped ears, Carter has the stereotypical, somewhat intimidating “pit bull” look, but inside he’s a love bug craving the closeness of people. He has an easy way about him and is a great buddy to be around.

January 7, 2025 was a banner day for Carter. That was the day he went to his foster home! He immediately fit right in with his temporary family consisting of two adults, kids – ages 6, 4, and 18 months, cats, and dogs. He loves car rides with his foster mom to pick up the kids at school…or anytime at all! Something else he loves is treats! Initially a bit grabby with treats, his foster mom worked with him using continuous eye contact and a hand signal to calm him down.
Carter is great with kids and enjoys hanging out with them, and if a blanket is involved it’s even better! He’s quite a snuggler (lap dog is what his foster mom calls him) and enjoys being covered with his blanket and being very close to his people. Carter also loves the outdoors and was delighted to romp in the snow a couple of months ago.
Carter is a very good boy and stands at the home’s back door and barks for potty time.

When inside the home, he’ll grab interesting (and sometimes very inappropriate) things and eat them. He had an emergency surgery in January to remove a piece of corn cob from his intestines. Vomiting had to be induced when he ate a few Slim Jims and the wrappers in February. He was in such awful physical condition when he was surrendered. I believe Carter had to fend for himself for a long time, and those old feelings of hunger are still with him and cause him to go for the food when he thinks he can grab it quickly! Hopefully, after finding a loving home, he’ll begin to feel secure and those old urges will disappear.
He loves to chew things so Carter specific toys are a must.
I’ll end this with quotes from his foster…
“Carter is the best, most behaved dog.”
“Carter is the most gentle and loving dog.”
“Two words perfectly describe Carter…gentle giant!”

Doesn’t he sound dreamy? Please consider taking this jewel of a dog into your home and heart!!
