October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and since many of us have shelter and rescue dogs I thought we would take this opportunity to kick off a blanket drive here at DDR.
Since we are only a couple of weeks away from cold temps here in the state of Virginia I wanted to officially kick off a Blanket Drive for our partner shelters and rescues. We picked up 40 blankets last night at Walmart from some of the donations we received last week from our Deaf Dogs Awareness week fund drive. Most of the shelters we work with have indoor kennels but the dogs either lay on cement floors or they have Kuranda beds and I would like to donate blankets for the dogs that lay on cement but also for the dogs to have on their Kuranda beds. I know my dogs live for blankets. They nest in them and my little dogs want to be covered up with them. The goal is to make the dogs as comfortable as we can until their forever person walks into the shelter and takes them home.
The blankets run $ 2.88 each and they also have bigger thicker blankets for under $5.88 or so (for the large dogs). The problem I am seeing at our local Walmart is they are priced so cheap they are flying off the shelves. I fear they will run out before we hit our goal. Our goal is to reach a minimum of 400 blankets so I want to launch this today so our supporters have a chance to buy these blankets before they sell out.
There are three ways you can help.
1. Launch a blanket drive with your family and friends and just ask them to pick up 2 blankets each ($6) and give them to you to donate to Deaf Dogs Rock
2. Buy a $30.00 gift card which will allow us to buy 10 blankets (this saves you on shipping) and mail it to us (or mail a personal check and make it out to Deaf Dogs Rock).
3. Hit our donate button and for every $10 donated we can purchase 3 blankets each.
The reason we want to do a blanket drive for the local shelters in rescues is to keep the dogs warm while they are waiting for their forever homes but also because these are the shelters and rescues who save deaf dogs, pull deaf dogs for us, find fosters for deaf dogs and in an emergency situation they are always there to support Deaf Dogs Rock in our rescue missions.
