Cowboy is a gorgeous adoptable deaf Australian Cattle mix (may have a mix of Australian Shepherd) who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish him, continue his training using positive reinforcement training methods and always keep him safe.
From his rescue advocate: Cowboy is active, intelligent, and outgoing. Found stray, Cowboy was picked up by Tulsa Animal Welfare where he served a stray hold. As we visited him, we quickly realized he was deaf so we brought him home to get well (kennel cough) and start some training to help him find a great home. Cowboy has never met a strangers. He has a wonderful, funny personality and could likely learn anything. We do believe someone was hard on Cowboy in his puppy stage, perhaps not realizing he was deaf. He will occasionally flinch or duck if you make a sudden movement, but with time and proper training, he will gain confidence and trust.
Cowboy loves to go for walks and likes a good swim in our pond. He has great retrieving skills too, so could likely be taught to dock dive. He is happy to meet other dogs, but doesn’t have the best social skills…meaning he’s a bit over-the-top when meeting other dogs. He wants to go straight to big, rowdy play instead of doing a proper greeting. We think with time and controlled interactions, this could be resolved. He does not have a mean bone in his body, he just doesn’t always read other dogs well…especially when they don’t want to play.
We are currently using a vibration-only (NO SHOCK!) collar to teach Cowboy that the vibration means “check-in” so we can start to teach him attention and a good recall. Right now, vibration means TREAT and he is very food motivated so will turn and come to you when he feels it. The collar will be gifted to whomever adopts Cowboy.
This is a bright, willing, handsome boy who just need the right human to help him navigate the world. We are so excited to help Cowboy find his perfect happily-ever-after.
