Maxine – DE – Adopted

Maxine - DE - Adopted

Update 2-27-2014: Maxine has been adopted! Meet Maxine. She is located at the Delaware SPCA Sussex Chapter in Georgetown, DE Maxine is a major beauty with a great personality. She is a very sweet white American Bulldog mix with gorgeous light gray eyes. Maxine is a year old and is deaf. Staff and volunteers are working with her with hand signals/signs. She is a very smart girl and like other deaf dogs, she is a wonderful visual learner. Right now she sits and lies down when rewarded with treats (that she takes very gently). This very friendly and loving girl will thrive in a great home where someone is willing to work with her. Maxine is going to make a wonderful addition to some lucky household! If you are interested in this dog, please call the shelter at 302-856-6361 to make sure she is still available. Sussex County Shelter: 22918 Dupont Boulevard, Georgetown, DE 19947 | Phone: 302-856-6361   From Rain Tyler who sent in this info. on Maxine:Please note, Maxine is not in danger (Delaware SPCA is no-kill) but she really needs to be out of the shelter and into a loving home as soon as possible so that she can continue her training with her own family. I am a shelter volunteer who happens to have 5 deaf dogs of her own. I […]

Maxine – DE – Adopted

Maxine - DE - Adopted

Update: 1-10-2013: Maxine has been adopted and she is loving her new home! Meet sweet beautiful Maxine! Maxine is a white, one and a half year old spayed female deaf American Pit bull Terrier. She is located in Newark, DE. She is up to date on all vaccines, has been de-wormed, and is heart worm negative. She is VERY people friendly and gets along well with other dogs, but is also very energetic so has been known to play too rough with other dogs at times. She would probably not be good in a household with little dogs or small children (not due to aggression, but due to her size and activity levels). Maxine has not been tested with cats. The kennel staff has been trying to work on teaching her hand signals but it has been incredibly difficult in a large, full shelter to train her on a consistent basis. She had been adopted out previously but her adopter had never dealt with a young deaf dog before and “could not deal with her”. I cannot say for certain that she is housebroken but I have not seen her mess in her kennel run so she probably has a good idea at this point of how things are supposed to go. She is currently located at the Delaware SPCA in Stanton, DE. If interested, […]

Adam – DE – Adopted

Adam - DE - Adopted

Update 4-21-2013: Adam has been adopted. Meet handsome and sweet Adam!  He’s a pit bull mix that was found wandering the streets of NYC. The rescue I work with pulled him off death row the day he was supposed to be euthanized. He’s lived with me and my pug, Boo since August. He has been over looked multiple times because of being deaf. He has learned to sit and lay down using hand signals. He is a huge love bug and always wants to cuddle and give kisses.   He’s a big boy at 52lbs but he still acts like a puppy. He loves going on long walks (we walk at least once a day) and he loves a fenced in backyard to run. He loves kids though he would do best with older children considering he doesn’t realize his size. He can be dog selective so the best bet would where he’d be the only dog though I’m willing to try introducing him. He’s never been with a cat. He does have some separation anxiety so he’s kenneled with puzzle toys during the day. He’s come a long way from being afraid of everything. He will be a wonderful addition to a family that has time to work with him and love him, since he loves everyone! Since I work with an established rescue […]

Hokie – ADOPTED!

Hokie - ADOPTED!

Update: 7-22-2012: Hocus Pocus aka Hokie has a new home and a new blog! To keep up with her on her mom’s new blog The Second Hand Dogs click here.  This sweet girl was taken to the Kent County SPCA in Camden, DE because her owner died. She is a 3 year old deaf Jack Russell Terrier. Can you imagine one day you are living your dream and the next day you are stuck at a shelter with all kinds of weird smells and vibrations. The pup doesn’t recognize anyone not even the food they are giving her. Although her owner passed away the shelter staff has tried calling members of the deceased family and no one will call them back. I guess they just don’t want to bother with a scared deaf dog that used to belong to someone they loved. This girl needs our help to find a new forever home. She will need a patient and loving family to live inside with her humans. She will also need a secure fenced yard unless she can be adopted by a retired person who can walk her often.       If you are interested in knowing more about this sweet girl, please contact Sara Knight at [email protected] or call the number below and ask for Sara. Click here to go to the Kent County SPCA […]
